St. Margaret’s hosted eight schools and more than 100 students and their families on Wednesday as the annual Battle of the Books (BOB) Tournament brought a spirited reading competition to the Performing Arts Center for South Orange County students in grades 4 and 5.
The tournament featured head-to-head matchups with teams answering questions regarding details from books on a 20-title reading list. Teams received points for answering with the correct book title and correct author.

After three rounds, the top four teams by points competed in the finals.

Schools with competing teams included St. Margaret’s, Tarbut v’ Torah, Olivewood, Mission Basilica, St. Anne, St. Edwards, Mission Viejo Christian and Serra Catholic. There were also three “BOB United” teams made up of individuals from different schools.

The St. Margaret’s “Music of the BOBs” team of Claire Martin, Callie Maciariello, Alison James, Riley Bredall, Mia Maroutsos and Justin Lee placed third in the tournament. St. Margaret’s also had a “When the Seas Turned to BOB” team of Valentino Karmis, Brandon Yang, Adora Zhang, Sheridan Hagmier, Lauren Lee and Kasra Haghighat. In addition, Samarth Wadhwa, Gavin Wang and Ross Johnson competed for BOB United teams.

Students in grades 4 and 5 have been reading and preparing for the tournament since last summer. St. Margaret’s teams were selected based on an in-school competition during Literacy Day earlier this month.

Students interested in the BOB program at St. Margaret’s can reach out to BOB coaches Darla Magana and Colleen Beshk for the summer reading list.
