St. Margaret’s Lower School STEAM Block and one if its signature grade 5 units were the focus of a presentation at the Spring CUE 2019 Conference last weekend in Palm Springs.

The presentation by Director of Library and Digital Literacy Angela Mackenzie, Lower School art teacher Mary Mayer-Grubb and Lower School ICE Lab teacher Laura Redman demonstrated the successful implementation of the Lower School STEAM Block and went in-depth on a project-based unit on water conservation that uses design thinking to solve problems and create innovative solutions.

St. Margaret’s grade 5 students participate in a “Home Water Consumption Challenge” where students measure personal water usage at home by tracking gallons used in faucets, showers, toilets, dishwashers and washing machines and use math concepts to convert figures and chart the data. Students then use design thinking to brainstorm an idea to better conserve water at home, using art, engineering and technology concepts to create a water-conservation tool.

The Spring CUE Conference is an annual gathering of educators with the goal of inspiring innovative learners in all disciplines through fostering community, personalizing learning, infusing technology, developing leadership and advocating educational opportunities for all.
