Middle School Students Compete in High-Energy Math Bee

Solving challenging math problems in a fast-paced environment with their peers cheering them on, 11 St. Margaret’s Middle School students competed in the 11^th annual Math Counts Competition last week in Hurlbut Theater.

 

The competition had a bracket-style format and head-to-head showdowns solving challenging math problems. Grade 8 student Kate Matthew emerged as the winner, while grade 8 student Devin Thomas placed second and grade 7 student Rex Li was third.

 

Each Middle School student at St. Margaret’s took a qualifying test in their math class, which was used to determine the top four in each grade level that would participate in the competition. The 11 competitors were Kate, Devin and Alex Kenny from grade 8, Rex, Radley Copps, Rishabh Mallela and Ronin McMahon in grade 7, and Renee Andrade, Abby Hancock, Drew Otto and Maggie Wang in grade 6.

 

Math Counts is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement across the United States. The top placers at St. Margaret’s will move on to the Math Counts regional competition, which will take place at the University of California, Irvine on February 24.
