Girls Soccer Wins CIF Quarterfinal Match for Johnny Marmelstein’s 500th Career Victory
The girls soccer program advanced in the CIF-SS Playoffs, marking head coach Marmelstein's milestone win.
Girls soccer head coach Johnny Marmelstein celebrated his 500th career win Tuesday evening as St. Margaret’s thumped visiting Beverly Hills High, 4-0. The Tartans dominated on the pitch, moving on to the CIF-SS semifinal round. The Tartans were propelled by scorers Lauren Otterbein, Taylor Nock, Elle Kang (PK) and Juliet Ballard.
Marmelstein has coached the Tartans since the 2000-2001 season, amassing a 338-99-41 record at the school which includes CIF championships in 2006, 2011, 2012 and 2014. Marmelstein previously coached at St. Bernard's Catholic High School and Chadwick School with a combined record of 162-91-27.
"The only way to amass 500 wins is to be an innovator that constantly evolves with the game," said St. Margaret's Director of Athletics Patrick Bendzick. "Coach Marmelstein embodies those qualities and St. Margaret’s has been the lucky beneficiary of his passion for the sport. I am in awe of his consistency and admire the caliber of the programs he has created."
“First and foremost, what was really most important about this win was that my girls, who have worked so incredibly hard throughout the season, were able to advance to the CIF-SS semifinals. But for me personally, I recognize that God has blessed me with a wonderful, supportive family, tremendous student-athletes and their families, and amazing school communities in which to thrive and to be successful," said coach Marmelstein. "I am extremely grateful to have spent most of my career as a soccer coach at St. Margaret’s. It really has been a huge blessing in my life to have been a Tartan for so long!”
Marmelstein and the Tartans will look to continue its winning ways as they face off against Hemet High School on Tartan Field on Saturday, Feb. 16 and continue the quest for St. Margaret's fifth CIF Championship in girls soccer.
