St. Margaret’s Hosts Symposium Focused on Digital Citizenship and Technology Use

The educators, which included 13 St. Margaret's faculty and staff members, participated in workshops and discussions around properly educating responsible technology use and citizenship to a generation of students growing up in a digital world.
More than 40 educators from across Southern California came to St. Margaret’s last weekend for the Common Sense Media/Eduscape SoCal Digital Citizenship Symposium. The guests included school teachers, district superintendents and technology coaches, and they were joined by 13 St. Margaret’s faculty and staff members from all divisions and departments.

The educators participated in workshops and discussions around properly educating responsible technology use and citizenship to a generation of students growing up in a digital world.

“Having so many of our faculty and staff take part in this professional-development day is indicative of how invested they are in supporting students around this emerging conversation,” said Angela Mackenzie, St. Margaret’s director of library and digital literacy. “Overall, the day was a huge success. We are proud to be able to lead in this work and host such lively, thought-provoking discussions around this important initiative.”

St. Margaret’s was certified a Common Sense School by Common Sense Media earlier this school year, as a result of its ongoing initiatives to promote digital citizenship and responsible use of technology to its community. The school’s ambition to be a leader in this space led to the opportunity to host the Common Sense Media/Eduscape symposium and welcome educators from Orange, Los Angeles and San Diego counties for the day-long event.

Attendees learned more about essential elements and best practices for safeguarding students’ digital lives throughout the day. They explored topics such as the links between technology use and social-emotional development, how to maintain a balance and teach students self-awareness regarding screen time, keeping student data safe and building a positive digital culture at a school.

St. Margaret’s has prioritized digital citizenship and relationship with technology as part of a strategic focus on student health and wellness. Earlier this school year St. Margaret’s partnered with The Social Institute, an organization that aims to empower students to win at social media through a positive approach that reinforces leadership strengths and high character online.
