Tartans Recognized With Regional Scholastic Awards in Art and Writing

The 19 regional Gold Key winners will be forwarded for judging in the national competition.
St. Margaret’s talented artists and writers were honored in the 2019 Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, winning 61 art awards and 49 writing awards. That includes a combined 19 Gold Keys won by 12 different Tartans in the West Coast Regional At-Large Division.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards has recognized art and writing works in 29 different categories for students grades 7-12. Judges look for work that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Gold Keys are considered “the very best works submitted to local programs.”

St. Margaret’s had Gold Key winners in every eligible grade for the second straight year. There Tartan Gold Key winners in four different writing categories and three different art categories.

The 19 regional Gold Key winners will be forwarded for judging in the national competition.

Art

St. Margaret’s had seven Gold Key winners, 28 Silver Key winners and 26 honorable mentions in art for categories ranging from photography to drawing and illustration to ceramics and glass.

Sophomore Claire Ahn received two Gold Keys for her drawing and illustration submissions “Illusory” and “Lost in California,” in addition to two Silver Keys. Sophomore Tiana Pavia also won two Gold Keys for her photography submissions “Shorebreak” and “Sandblown.” Tiana also had three Silver Keys and three honorable mentions in photography.

Also winning Gold Keys were sophomore Isabel Lim (photography), senior Tate Lissaur (ceramics & glass) and freshman Simon Valle (photography).

Writing

In the writing categories, St. Margaret’s had 12 Gold Key winners, 15 Silver Key winners and 22 honorable mentions.

Junior Nadia Farjami won four Gold Keys for her poetry, honored for her works “Dirt,” “Disconnections and Dough,” “In Color” and “Branches.” She also won three Silver Keys and three honorable mentions for her poetry.

Winning two Gold Keys was grade 8 student Sophia Karahalios (one for poetry, one for novel writing) and grade 8 student Tina Mai (for poetry). Other Gold Key winners were sophomore Kaelyn Dunnell (short story), junior Shaudeh Farjami (personal essay & memoir), sophomore Molly Green (personal essay & memoir) and grade 7 student Kate Taylor (poetry).
