A cast of about 50 Middle School students and a technical crew of about 30 students delivered a polished and energetic production.
A cast of about 50 Middle School students delivered a polished and energetic production of Once Upon a Mattress, Youth Edition in the Hurlbut Theater from November last week. The show was directed by Katie Deshan, Middle School theater director, with assistant director Cori Samskey, Middle and Upper School math teacher. In addition, choreography by Carly Taberski with musical direction by Lex Leigh.
The ensemble’s lively performance showcased crisp comedic timing and strong vocal work, highlighted by full-stage numbers such as Spanish Panic and Opening for a Princess.
Behind the scenes, a technical crew of about 30 students supported the production. Led by Technical Director and Resident Designer Gordon Richins, the team included Stage Manager Rowan Harvey, Assistant Stage Manager Claire Chuang, and Lighting Designer Gavin Shams. Together, they constructed an elaborate, brightly colored castle set that transformed the Hurlbut Theater into a vibrant medieval throne room.
Director Katie Deshan praised the cast and crew for their dedication and camaraderie throughout the process. “The energy during show week was electric,” Deshan said. “Seeing these Middle Schoolers light up the stage with their comedic timing and passion for storytelling was truly wonderful.”
