Parent Up Distinguished Speaker Series

Save The Date

We are proud to announce our lineup for this season’s Parent Up Speaker Series. Each year the Parent Teacher Fellowship works with St. Margaret’s school leaders to identify fascinating speakers for parent education. We select authors, educators and experts who complement the school’s mission. Parent Up is an educational initiative generously funded through the PTF grant program. It is free of charge and open to the entire community. A reception in the PAC Lobby begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by speaker presentations from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. in the Hurlbut Theater. All book signings will take place in the lobby directly following the speaker presentations. Please mark your calendar and join us!

With generational divides wider than ever, parents, educators, and employers have an urgent need to understand today’s rising generation of teens and young adults. Born after 1995, “iGen” is the first generation to spend their entire adolescence in the age of the smartphone. With social media and texting replacing other activities, “iGen” spends less time with their friends in person, perhaps why they are experiencing unprecedented levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness.

Jean M. Twenge, Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University, is the author of more than 140 scientific publications and six books, the latest of which is iGen: Why Today's Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy--and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood. She holds a BA and MA from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Research shows that teenage sleep is a unique time in the sleep lifecycle. When boys and girls hit puberty, the timing of their biological clocks begins a dramatic shift toward a preference for evenings, a shift that lasts throughout adolescence. They are true Wolves, based on the archetypes from Dr. Breus book, The Power of When.

Michael J. Breus, Ph.D. (‘the Sleep Doctor”) is a double board-certified Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Sleep Specialist. He is one of only 168 psychologists in the world with his credentials. His ground-breaking bio-hacking book proves that there is a perfect time to do everything, based on your biological chronotype (early bird or night owl). Dr. Breus has given hundreds of speeches, is on the clinical advisory board of The Dr. Oz Show and has been a sleep expert for WebMD for more than 14 years.
  • DR. MICHAEL G. THOMPSON

The Pressured Child: Helping Your Child Achieve Success in School and in Life was written to help parents understand the complex journey of children through school, from Kindergarten through senior year. School occupies more waking hours than kids spend at home; and school is full not just of studies but of human emotion. For parents, this book reveals the hidden emotional landscape of the school day and points toward the answers we both desire and dread as we seek to help our children find success in school and beyond.

Michael G. Thompson, Ph.D. is a consultant, author and psychologist specializing in children and families. He is the supervising psychologist for the Belmont Hill School and has worked in more than seven hundred schools across the United States, as well as in international schools in Central America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
