Parent Up Distinguished Speaker Series

Save The Dates

The Parent Up Speaker Series is an educational initiative generously funded through the PTF grant program. It is free of charge and open to the entire community. Bring friends and take advantage of these thought-provoking and engaging presenters. Reception in the PAC Lobby begins at 8:45 a.m., followed by speaker presentations from 9-10 a.m in the Hurlbut Theater. All book signings will take place in the lobby directly following the speaker presentation.

  • JULIE LYTHCOTT-HAIMS

    Friday, October 27
    Julie Lythcott-Haims is the author of the New York Times best-selling book “How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success.” The book emerged from her decade as Stanford University’s Dean of Freshmen. Toward the end of her tenure as dean, she began speaking and writing widely on the harm of helicopter parenting. How to Raise an Adult is being published in over two dozen countries, and gave rise to a TED talk that became one of the top TED Talks of 2016 as well as a sequel which will be out in 2018.

    Assistant Professor of psychology and social behavior at UC Irvine, Piff will speak to the emerging science of awe and its transformative role in our lives. Awe helps shift our focus from narrow self-interest to the interests of others and is that often-positive feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends our understanding of the world. It is an antidote to narcissism, motivating us to act in collaborative ways that enable strong groups and more cohesive communities. Piff also directs the Morality, Emotion, and Social Hierarchy Lab at UCI.
