Coaching Legend Paul Westhead Gives Tartans Mid-Season Boost

St. Margaret's girls basketball team recently had the opportunity to learn from former professional and college coach Paul Westhead.
The St. Margaret's girls basketball program stepped into 2019 with a high-tempo workout under the tutelage of coaching great Paul Westhead. Coach Westhead put the Tartans through their paces, emphasizing fundamentals and key philosophies to maximizing success on the court.

Paul Westhead has amassed a storied career at the high school, college, professional and international levels. Most notably, Westhead is the only coach to win both an NBA and WNBA title with the Los Angeles Lakers (1980) and Phoenix Mercury (2007). During his collegiate coaching career, Westhead is perhaps best known for his tenure as the head coach of the Loyola Marymount University men's program from 1985-1990. LMU compiled a 105-48 record with three consecutive NCAA Division-I Tournament appearances, including advancing to the Elite Eight in 1990. During the 1990 tournament, LMU downed defending champions University of Michigan 149-115 in a game that still holds the NCAA tournament record for highest combined score (264), highest team score (149) and most three-pointers made (21). In 2010 ESPN featured Westhead in its "30-for-30" series episode "Guru of Go."

During the St. Margaret's workout, Westhead covered the pick-and-roll, two-player game, defending the screen and enhancing the transition game.

“It’s not the first shot on the transition that wins, it’s the put-back because we have to be down the court faster than the other team,” he emphasized.

"The girls basketball program was thrilled to have an opportunity to learn from such an experienced coach that instructed how important team is to becoming successful," said head coach Nicole Riscica. "His fast-break offense and drills fit perfect into our team philosophies and what we are teaching and implementing daily. Coach Westhead's energy and passion for the game was inspiring to the players and the coaching staff; a perfect way to start the 2019 year, practicing like a champion. Thank you, Coach Westhead!"

The Tartans will look to turn the experience into a continued successful season on Wednesday, January 9 against Orangewood Academy at home at 6 p.m.
