PHOTOS: Upper School English 4 Class Shares Love of Storytelling With Preschool Students

The activity was an opportunity for English 4 students to serve as mentors to younger Tartans and help craft an original story.
The Upper School’s English 4: Short Stories students became storytelling mentors this week, as two classes visited the Preschool to guide the younger Tartans in a storytelling activity utilizing a host of graphical stickers.

The classes, which totaled 29 seniors, visited both Carole Magaldi’s P4 class and Tammy Pipitone’s P3 class. They worked one-on-one with their younger classmates to craft original ideas that had the foundational elements of a story, a beginning, middle and end, as well as a problem the subject had to overcome.

The preschool students’ imaginations took it from there. Using stickers to illustrate their ideas, the young Tartans came up with stories about dinosaurs, butterflies, the ocean, princesses, animals and nature.

“Many of the stories had themes, such as sharing, friendship, problem-solving and overcoming fears,” said Upper School English teacher Meredith Schumacher.

The activity was an opportunity for English 4 students to share their love of storytelling while serving as mentors to the younger Tartans. It is also part of a broader school strategic priority to make cross-divisional connections and embrace St. Margaret’s unique preschool-grade 12 program—a priority that younger and older students alike have said they enjoy and seek out.

“It is so special when our older and younger Tartans are able to come together and learn. On one hand it nurtures the older students’ personal values, like community and kindness, as well as their leadership skills, and on the other it inspires our younger students with these amazing Tartan role models,” Mrs. Schumacher said.
