Tartans Enjoy Major League Experience at Halo Classic

For the third consecutive year, the Tartan baseball program experienced a slice of Major League life. Facing San Juan Capistrano rivals Saddleback Valley Christian at Angel Stadium on Wednesday, the venue and weather could not get any better for an afternoon of baseball.

Participating in the Halo Classic series of high school regular season games played at Angel Stadium, the Tartans and Warriors met to continue a tradition that has seen the teams trade wins over the past two seasons. Unfortunately for the Tartans, Saddleback Valley eeked out a 10-9 win to avenge last year’s 13-2 loss. The Tartans were tenacious in the final inning, trailing 10-6 before savvy baserunning put St. Margaret's within one with a final out left. A solid Saddleback defensive play stranded two Tartan baserunners to end the game.

"It's a once in a lifetime experience that I've been able to have three times, so it has been great to see where the ‘big boys’ play and see what that is really like," said junior catcher Alex Smith when asked about the big-league accommodations at Angel Stadium.

The Tartans were led by Alex Smith who was 3-3 with a walk and hit by pitch, and sophomores Roberto Gonzalez (3-4) and Caden Smith (2-4). St. Margaret's (9-7, 5-2 league) will look to bounce back against Academy League opponent Oxford Academy on Friday, April 27 at San Juan Sports Park. Game time is 3:15 p.m.

Head coach Scott Wallis remarked about the game, "We've been up and down this year, with a lot of ups lately. This might have been a good loss for us. We battled back after making too many mistakes early in the game. Hopefully, it was a wake-up call we needed as we head down the stretch and push for a 2nd place finish in the Academy League.”
