St. Margaret's Student-Athletes Commit to Colleges Across the Country During Spring National Signing Period
Six student-athletes from the Class of 2018 committed to study and play intercollegiate athletics during the spring signing period, joining fellow seniors who committed during the fall and winter signing periods.
St. Margaret's Episcopal School is pleased to announce that six student-athletes from the Class of 2018 committed to play intercollegiate athletics next year during the spring national signing period. Seniors Natalie Kowal, Max Martinez, Roger Penske, Andrew Shin, Makaela Weeda and Taryn Wilson will continue their academic pursuits, as well as play their respective sport, at an impressive group of colleges and universities.
These student-athletes will join nine of their classmates who committed during the fall and winter signing periods.
Natalie Kowal, Lewis and Clark College
Natalie Kowal will study and play tennis at NCAA Division-III Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore.
Natalie, a 2017 varsity team captain and member of the 2016 CIF Div. II quarterfinalist Tartan tennis team was a top singles player during her career at St. Margaret's. Having played tennis since the age of six, Natalie is ranked No. 387 in USTA Girls 16 Singles Division in California an No. 712 in the United States.
Natalie's extensive volunteer work includes Friday Night Club, a service organization that offers a fun social setting for children with special needs and volunteers to interact with each other, Talk about Curing Autism, Fabretto International in Managua, Nicaragua, Someone Cares Soup Kitchen and Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano. Natalie has also secured an internship at Talk About Curing Autism as part of her Independent Senior Project.
Natalie plans on majoring in education and Spanish at Lewis and Clark.
Max Martinez, Carnegie Mellon university
Max Martinez will study and play football at NCAA Division-III Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Penn.
Max, a four-year member of St. Margaret's varsity football program, also served as team captain his junior and senior seasons. In 2017, Max was named Academy League Lineman of the Year, First Team All-Academy League, First Team All-CIF and a National Football Foundation, Orange County Chapter Scholar-Athlete.
Also at St. Margaret's, Max is a member and team captain of the Tartan lacrosse team.
Max has been a President and Vice-President of the Lion's Heart volunteer organization and has been a member for six years.
Max will major in mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon.
Roger Penske, University of Rhode Island
Roger Penske will study and play soccer at NCAA Division-I University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I.
Roger has been the starting goalkeeper for the Los Angeles Galaxy Academy U12/13 and U13/14 teams and starting goalkeeper and captain on the Pateadores Academy U15/16 and 2018 No. 2 nationally ranked U19 teams. Roger has earned invitations to the U.S. Soccer National Training Centers 2014-2016 and was named as the only goalkeeper on the Top Drawer top 30 list in Southern California. In 2015 Roger was invited to English Second Division Derby County preseason camp and English Premier League team Watford Football Club preseason camp in 2016.

Andrew Shin will study and play lacrosse at NCAA Division-III Massachusets Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.
Andrew, a current starter on the Tartan lacrosse team, was recently named a Warrior/U.S. Lacrosse Player of the Week in the western section for a 10-goal, two-assist performance the week of April 10.
Andrew volunteers at Emerald Cove Day Camp and assists in coaching lacrosse at St. Margaret's at the middle school level.
Andrew plans to major in engineering and math at MIT.
Makaela Weeda, Amherst College
Makaela Weeda will study and play volleyball at NCAA Division-III Amherst College in Amherst, Mass.
Makaela has been a two-year varsity player at St. Margaret's and a two-year captain at Laguna Beach Volleyball Club.
Makaela Has volunteered at Mariner's Church thrift store and food pantry, St. Edward's Church and has attended the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Tactical Medical school in 2017-2018.
Makaela intends to major in biology at Amherst.
Taryn Wilson, Case Western Reserve University
Taryn Wilson will study and run track at NCAA Division-III Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Taryn, who holds the school record in the 4x400, was also named team MVP her sophomore and junior years.
Taryn has been a six-year active member of Lion's Heart volunteer organization, receiving leadership and service awards. Taryn has also volunteered at Breakthrough SJC, Saddleback Church and Special Camp for Special Kids.
Taryn intends to major in psychology at Case Western.
Roger has volunteered with Special Camp for Special Kids at St. Margaret's.
Roger intends to major in business at the University of Rhode Island.
