St. Margaret's Cross Country Teams Have Strong Showing at CIF State Finals

After finishing as the CIF Southern Section Finals Division 5 runner-up last weekend, the St. Margaret’s girls cross country team doubled back to post an equally impressive performance at the state level. Led once again by Andi Carnell, the Tartans finished 4th in a nail-biting race that came down to a single point after 3.1 miles of racing. Lick-Wilmerding High from the North Coast Section would edge the Tartans on the tiebreaker to clinch 3rd place and the final podium spot. It was a strong showing for St. Margaret’s as they improved from 13th in 2016 to 4th in 2017. Carnell would earn All-State honors with her 8th-place finish (18:38), and with only one senior on the roster, the future looks very bright.

The boys team moved up three spots from their 2016 finish to capture 7th place with 204 points. Matt Soto saved his best race for last as the senior averaged 5:21 per mile to finish in 16:35. But it was Matt Colglazier that had the race of the day to shore up the middle of the Tartan rotation and finished 3rd for the team in 17:12. The boys teams share a similar profile with the girls in having just one senior in their scoring five runners. It resulted in the best-combined finish in school history at the California State Championships, and both groups will look to return in 2018.
