Chinese National Team Coach Visits With SMES Swimming and Diving Teams
Yinghong Chen, a member of the Chinese National Swim Team coaching staff, dropped in on a St. Margaret's practice recently and offered tips and critique on the Tartans' form. Chen, who coached current men's 800m freestyle world-record holder Zhang Lin, worked with captains Matthew Josephs and Nick Scheel on balancing their over-water recovery with their under-water catch.
"It was a great experience and honor to be coached by an Olympic coach at practice. It was cool to hear all the little comments she had on my technique to help improve my skills," Matthew said.
Nick remarked, "It was an honor to practice with Coach Chen. The opportunity to learn from someone with such immense knowledge and accomplishments in swimming was an experience that will undoubtedly help me reach my goals as a distance swimmer. Coach Chen focused on the fundamentals of technique and cadence. Within the short period I spent with her, I already made strides in these areas and look forward to utilizing her tips to refine my stroke as the season progresses."
Coach Chen is currently working with Chinese National Team swimmers who are in the U.S. and training at the University of Southern California. The meeting with the Tartan swimmers was arranged by Ming and Dan Zhou, parents of Frank, a grade 8 student at St. Margaret's.
The Tartan swimming and diving teams will kick off the 2017 season with a meet at Saddleback College against Calvary Chapel Downey on Tuesday, March 14.
