Senior Nic Gitter Leads The Pack as Tartan Cross Country Sweeps Academy League Championships
St. Margaret's produced tremendous results to sweep the Academy League Finals at Irvine Regional Park on Thursday afternoon. The boys, led by senior Nic Gitter's blistering 15:33 race, edged No.2 Crean Lutheran 28-33 for the title.
“The varsity boys controlled the race early on but had to fight off a solid push from Crean Lutheran late in the race. They responded well to the challenge and ran a stellar second half,” said head coach Patrick Bendzick.
On the girls side, the Tartans outkicked CIF Division 5 No. 3 Sage Hill to claim the 41-47 victory. Julia Martin, Charlotte Jones, Audrey Larson, Daisy Sellas and Anika Grover made up the scoring for St. Margaret's.
Coach Bendzick remarked, “The coaching staff was truly impressed with how the athletes approached the race as a team. We have been battling a few injuries over the past couple of weeks, and several athletes sacrificed their personal goals to ensure their teammates were taken care of. Audrey Larson was particularly impressive. She latched on to Daisy Sellas from the gun and the duo methodically pulled apart the middle of the Sage Hill lineup at the 2-mile mark.”
Pace improvements of 5:59 for the boys and 4:34 for the girls over their 2015 results puts the Tartans on track to be a contender at the Southern Section Prelims. Thursday's win also marks the first time since 2010 that both teams have captured simultaneous Academy League titles.
The Tartans will return to action Saturday, November 12 at the CIF Southern Section Prelims taking place at the Riverside Sports Complex at Reid Park.
