Tartan Cross Country Sets Pace for Season at Cool Breeze Invitational

In the first race of the season at historic Brookside Golf Course, the Tartan Cross Country teams looked to set the pace for the upcoming season.

The Tartans picked up where they left off in 2015 with all the boys posting times faster than what they ran last season. Nic Gitter led the Tartans with a late second-half surge to overtake teammate Charlie Smith and finish with a lifetime best of 15:52. Smith was not far behind, passing six runners in the final mile to finish in 15:59. The most significant improvement of the day was posted by Grant Kinsey, who was 2:33 faster than his best time from last year.

As a team, St. Margaret’s finished 5th in the Red Division, trailing only schools with an average student population of over 2,600.

In her first ever high school cross country race, Julia Martin broke from the chase pack with 1000 meters to run and took an impressive shot at the race leaders. She was able to overtake two runners with 400m to go, but eventually ran out of race course before she could take the lead. Her second place finish in 20:46 was especially impressive given that she is also a starting member of the Tartan girl's volleyball team in the fall.
