First Championship on Chalmers Field – Three Peat for MS Soccer Team

By Lori Fava - Middle School Athletic Coordinator
The grade 6 and 7/8 Middle School Mountain Soccer teams had an outstanding spring season! For the second consecutive season the grade 6 team played amazing soccer and finished the season with an undefeated record of 7-0, scoring 34 goals and only allowing two the entire season!

For the third consecutive season, the 7/8 grade team won the South County League Championship with a hard fought 2-1 victory over previously undefeated St. Edward’s School. In the team’s regular season match, the Monarchs defeated the Tartans 7-2, leaving the St. Margaret’s players looking forward to a rematch. From the opening whistle, the Tartans were fast out of the blocks chasing, pressing and countering the bewildered Monarchs all over Chalmers Field. Halfway into the first half, Logan Snyder picked up a through ball, streaked towards the goal and slotted home a perfect goal leaving the home side up 1-0. St. Edward’s upped the tempo but acrobatic goalkeeper Kennedy Barlow held them at bay. In the closing minutes of the first half, St. Edward’s drew a free kick near the Tartan penalty area. The subsequent and very clever free kick caught the defense off-guard and the Monarchs knotted the match at 1-1 going into the halftime interval.

After regrouping, the second half of the game was probably one of the most exciting Middle School soccer games ever played on this campus! Within five minutes, Snyder picked up a loose ball in the box and nicked the Monarch goalkeeper at the near post to give the hosts a precarious 2-1 lead. The rest of the match was an end-to-end, back and forth affair with both teams giving their best effort and battling for every ball. The solid play of the Tartan backline consisting of Cami Cassinelli, Charlotte Jones, Sean Sullivan, Jasper Adams and Audrey Larson stymied the visitors as each Monarch attack died like a wave on a navy blue shore! Goalkeeper Jamie MacKay made some amazing saves including a point-blank shot that was heading for the back of the net. The midfield trio of Bryce Chan, Saurabh Mallela and Delaney Fuller ran box to box defending and attacking and keeping pressure on the Monarch defense. Along with Snyder, forwards Andrew McAleer, Juliet Ballard and Evan Lee created numerous chances for the Tartans to extend their lead. At the end of the day, a 2-1 victory for St. Margaret’s over a valiant St. Edward’s squad was a fair result for quite an amazing match.

Sullivan was the Man of the Match for marking out of the match the best player on St. Edward’s team and for throwing his body all over the field including a diving block to save what might have been the tying goal in final seconds of the game. With a fantastic team effort, St. Margaret’s completes their championship season with an 8-2 record and another banner in the Campaigne Center.
