St. Margaret's Grounds Eagles 28-21

The Tartans relied on a team effort in the win.
St. Margaret's football program downed cross-town foe Capistrano Valley Christian, 28-21, in front of a raucous crowd at home on Friday. The win levels the Tartans' record at 2-2.
 
The Tartans opened the game strong with a Luke Newman (1 int, 5 tckl, 4 ast) interception to shut down the Eagles' starting drive. CVCS quickly rebounded, scoring two series later on an 18-yard rush. St. Margaret's answered in the second quarter as Kai Letcher (16-23-1, 3 TD) found Jack Kleinhanzl (3 catches for 81 yds, 2 TD) for a 57-yard TD strike and again for a 12-yard touchdown pass two minutes later. Capistrano Valley answered and took a slim 14-13 lead into halftime.
 
St. Margaret’s capitalized on solid defensive play in the second half with Sebastian Salazar leading with 5 solo tackles and 5 assists and Andrew Toubin contributing 5 solos and 1 assist. The Tartans got on the board again in the third quarter, as Sam Orellana (9 rushes for 27 yds, 1 catch for 2 yds) punched it in on the ground to put St. Margaret's ahead 20-14 to enter the final quarter of play.
 
Letcher and Newman again connected for a 37-yard touchdown while Jack Klausner (2 for 23) added the 2-point conversion, leaving the Tartans with a comfortable 28-14 lead over the Eagles. Capistrano Valley gained some momentum, scoring a rushing touchdown with 6 minutes left on the clock. However, a big Tartan defensive stop late halted any hope for a CVCS comeback as St. Margaret's held on for the non-league win.
 
St. Margaret's will next take on another local challenger, facing undefeated Dana Hills High School on the road on Friday, Sept. 27.
