The Tartans played Samueli Academy to a scoreless first half before Matt Groeninger opened up the scoring by netting a goal less than one minute into the second half. Groeninger had himself a night, winding up with three goals, including a penalty kick in St. Margaret's 4-0 win over the visiting Firewolves.  Keyon Namdar notched the Tartans' third goal of the night, a 35-yard strike with 10 minutes left in regulation.

The win puts the Tartans at 2-4-2 as the league play portion of the 2021-2022 campaign commences.

"When I was given the opportunity to lead the boys program here at St Margaret's, my immediate goal coming in was to change our culture and create an identity by playing a brand of soccer that is unique to us," said head coach Bryan Wallace. "I like to play position-style soccer through lines, but I also want to make sure that there are many vertical elements to our team's performance and create relationships in different channels. So far we have adapted well, and I am excited to see where we end up."

The Tartans return to action on the road against Sage Hill School on Tuesday, Jan. 11.

Girls Soccer

On Tuesday afternoon, St. Margaret's battled Fairmont Prep to a 3-0 win at the OC Great Park. Despite a slow start to the match, the Tartans took charge and coasted to a 2-0 lead in the first half. St. Margaret's kept the Huskies at bay in the second half, adding a late score in the 62nd minute to seal it.

Alexis Bullock opened the scoring for the Tartans at nine minutes with Julia Olosky following up two minutes later. Kayla Gerayli secured the win for St. Margaret's late in the game. Goalkeeper Riley Long made six saves in the win, including a set-piece save to preserve the lead heading into halftime.

"The team had a slow start to the game. The first 10 minutes were very hectic, and Fairmont almost went ahead after the first five minutes," said assistant coach Makenna Henry. "Fairmont's box shape midfield proved to be quite tricky for our team to solve and break through, but eventually, our speed of play and decision making separated us further from our competition."

The 4-3 Tartans will next face Sage Hill School at home on Tuesday, Jan. 11.
