Tartans Recognized at OC Register's Athletes of the Year Banquet

Kevin Groeninger and head cross country coach Patrick Bendzick were honored at the annual awards.
Graduated senior Kevin Groeninger and head cross country coach Patrick Bendzick picked up Lacrosse Athlete of the Year and Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year awards respectively at the OC Register's annual Athletes of the Year Banquet Wednesday night at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin. Groeninger and Bendzick were honored among more than 50 athletes and coaches at the event.

Groeninger's high school career culminated at the top in 2019, winning the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Lacrosse Championship and nabbing Athlete of the Year honors for the second consecutive year. Groeninger amassed 411 career points on 206 goals and 205 assists, making him the all-time leading scorer in California history. Groeninger will take his talents to Bryant University in the fall.

Bendzick earned an All-County Girls Team Coach of the Year selection in his fourth season as head coach of the Tartan cross country programs. In 2018 St. Margaret's girls finished first at the Academy League Finals, won a historic first-ever CIF-SS title and placed second in the CIF State Division IV final, only six points short of the top spot.
