The Tartans extended their seven-game win streak, downing the Sage Hill Lightning 8-1 in Newport Beach on Tuesday afternoon. St. Margaret's was led by Alex Smith's 4-for-4 effort, including two doubles, a single and a walk while driving in two runs. Will Riddle added two RBIs while Trey Pate and Hunter Smith added one apiece.

Defensively, Solomon Banks picked up the win with 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Alex Smith was tenatious behind the plate, throwing out two steal attempts by Sage Hill runners.

"Our team is in a place they haven't been in three years, believing they can win every game they play," said head coach Scott Wallis. "Eight wins in a row are nice, but we haven't clinched a playoff spot yet. Hopefully, with a big home crowd behind us we can do just that on Friday."

The Tartans will vie for a secure playoff spot, facing Sage Hill in the rubber match on Friday, April 12 at San Juan Sports Park at 3:15 p.m.

St. Margaret's bounced back from a close 12-11 loss to Mater Dei on March 26, defeating regional powers Torrey Pines (10-9) on March 28 and Novato (17-12) on April 9.

The Tartans received an outstanding effort from sisters Jordie Miles (5g, 1a, 5gb, 2to) and Niki Miles (4g, 2a, 7dc, 3gb, 4to) in the win. Maddie Barkate dominated at the x with 10 draw controls, also adding four goals, three assists, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Grace Karstetter (2g, 1a) and Audrey Larson (1g) rounded out the scoring for St. Margaret's.

Olivia Young shone in net, recording six saves and one groundball.

"Novato brought a fast-paced, transition attack. The game was determined by draw controls, which our midfielders dominated in possessing," said head coach Holly Reilly. "As an offense, we scored eight of seventeen goals assisted with six different scorers. We are possessing the ball more strategically and balancing our threats as a team. It was satisfying to face an opponent that exposed so many of our weaknesses in 2018 and play with confidence."

The Tartans will next face Trabucco Hills on the road on Saturday, April 13 at 3:00 p.m.
