STEM and Technology

Science, technology, engineering and math are the important disciplines that comprise the acronym STEM—a concerted focus in education since the U.S. government declared in 90s that the burgeoning technological age needed more graduates who possessed deep knowledge and skills in these areas.

STEM has long been a strong focus at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School. As a college-preparatory institution that sends off many of its graduates to further study STEM areas in college, St. Margaret’s offers the most challenging STEM curriculum and program in primary and secondary education today. Programs, including computer science and engineering, that begin in preschool and build year over year engage our students in a love of STEM disciplines and challenge them to reach to their highest potential.

Increasingly, our academic team has put a stronger emphasis on integrating the curriculum so that students can experience projects similar to how they are incorporated into STEM fields in the industry. We have incorporated the use of the design thinking process from Stanford University’s D School, that is critical to creation, innovation and invention.

St. Margaret’s STEM program serves our students’ natural interest, engages them through experiential, project-based curriculum, allows them to make sense of the technological world, builds critical and creative thinking and higher-order reasoning skills, and prepares them for college majors and 21st century careers in science, technology, engineering and math fields.

Further, our students understand the importance and interdisciplinary nature of STEM concepts today and their evolution in the future, and feel the reach of STEM into their everyday lives. Our students see the beauty of scientific phenomena, understand how technology can be used to solve everyday problems, marvel at the engineering in everyday objects, and see the applications that math has every day. Our students are enthused by these fields and desire to be lifelong learners in these areas, during and after their time at St. Margaret’s.
