Using Adobe Photo Deluxe to Prepare Digital Photos for the Web

You’ve probably noticed that the photos from your digital camera are huge.  Because of their size, they cannot be used in web pages until the dimensions are reduced.  Follow these steps:

  1. Open the picture file by clicking on the FILE MENU, and OPEN.  Find the file on your floppy or wherever you have saved it and click OK.
  2. Click on the ADVANCED button on the PhotoDeluxe toolbar at the left of your screen.
  3. Now you’ll see a choice of tabs at the top of your screen.  Click on SIZE.
  4. This next step is optional, but if you have “wasted” space around the edges of your photo, you may want to crop or TRIM the photo so that it looks better.  Click on TRIM and use your mouse to draw a box around the area of your photo that you’d like to keep.  (To draw a box, click and hold down your mouse button somewhere in the upper left of the photo, then move your hand diagonally down and to the right.) When you like the area you’ve selected, hit the ENTER key on your keyboard.  If you make an error, you can always click on the UNDO button to reverse the action.
  5. Click on the tab labeled PHOTO SIZE.  First, make sure that FILE SIZE is not checked, but PROPORTIONS is checked.  Second, check the resolution.  If it is higher than 72, change it to 72.  Next, look at the dimensions.  Change either the height or width to be no larger than 3 – 5 inches.  If you plan to have multiple photos on a web page, make them small.  If you’ll only put one image on a page, you don’t have to make the photo as small.  When you’re finished click OK.
  6. After the PHOTO SIZE window closes, your picture might seem smaller than you’d expected.  You can change the view percentage (located just above your image) to show the image at 100%.
  7. Now you’re ready to save.  Click on the FILE MENU and choose SAVE AS.  Then choose JPEG.  Type a filename and open the folder where you want to save the photo. Click OK.
  8. You’ll see a window called JPEG options.  Click on the ADVANCED button.  Under image options – quality, choose 5 (or higher).  After you complete this step once, you won’t need to do for additional photos you modify.
  9. Close the photo that still appears on your screen by clicking on the x in the upper right corner.  You’ll be asked to save.  Click NO because you’ve already saved the image as a JPEG.
