Introduction
Technology has become integral to the lives of St. Margaret's
students, faculty, and staff.
St. Margaret's believes that the use of technology enhances
the educational experience. Faculty are strongly
encouraged to integrate technology into the curriculum.
Although several courses provide specific instruction in
technology, students' exposure to computer instruction in
academic courses helps them gain the proficiency so necessary
for future achievement in a rapidly changing world.
To meet the technological needs of the campus, every building
and classroom is connected through fiber optic cable to a
high-speed T1 Internet connection. Students have the
ability dial into the St. Margaret's server for Internet access
for home. In addition, many of our subscriptions to
web-based databases and encyclopedias are available to students
using outside ISPs at home.
St. Margaret's offers three separate computer labs, one for
each division.
Lower School Computer Lab
Lower School students attend computer classes each week in the
lab. In addition, the lab is often open during recess and
lunch for individual exploration. A number of after-school
computer clubs meet in the lab.
The lab features 24 PCs, two teacher stations, two laser
printers (one color), one scanner, and a ceiling-mounted
projector for instruction.
Middle School Computer Lab
The Middle School Lab is a popular location for students during
lunch, tutorial, and after school. Many teachers reserve
the lab during class time so that students can work on class
projects and explore curriculum-related software. In
addition, the 6th Grade Research Skills, 7th Grade Digital Arts,
8th Grade Digital Photography, and 8th Grade Online Magazine
classes meet regularly in the lab.
The lab features 29 PCs for student use, one teacher station,
one B&W laser printer, one photo-quality color printer, one
scanner, and a ceiling-mounted projector for instruction.
Upper School Computer Lab
Upper School students use the lab before school, during study
halls and lunch, and after school. Several Upper School
classes are taught in the lab, including Computer Applications I
and II, Introduction to Programming, and Business Solutions
Through Technology.
The lab features 31 PCs for student use, one teacher station,
one B&W laser printer, one photo-quality color printer, one
scanner, and a ceiling-mounted projector for instruction.
Wireless Labs
The Lower School Wireless Lab consists of a mobile cart holding 23
networked laptop computers and one printer. The
Middle School Wireless Lab consists of a mobile cart holding 20
networked laptop computers and one printer.
The US Science Wireless Lab is not mobile and resides in the
Gateway building and is shared by all science labs. The wireless
labs can be reserved by teachers on a first come - first served
basis and is available only to those teachers who have attended
one of the training sessions on how to use the
carts/computers.
Library
The library features 17 "look-up" PCs, intended for
searching the library collection online and using the numerous
web subscriptions, including Proquest, The Electric Library,
Newsbank, Infotrac, SIRS, Gale Group Databases, EBSCO, Wilson
Web Resources, Encyclopedia Britannica, Grolier Encyclopedia,
World Book Encyclopedia, and more. Many of our students
also access these resources from home computers. The
library also has two laser printers (one color) and one scanner.
In addition to the "look-up" PCs, the library
includes a Resource Room used for training and for student work.
This lab features 20 PCs, one teacher station, one laser
printer, and a projector for instruction.
Classrooms
Each classroom features at least one PC, a printer, and either a
large wall- mounted monitor or for instruction. Many
classrooms have several computers. Some have scanners,
digital cameras, and ceiling-mounted projectors.
Art Department
The Art Department uses both PCs and Macs. |
