Websites of Interest

A curriculum-rich, teacher-developed Internet field trip, XcursionCentral is dedicated to connecting the classroom to the Internet by linking the class to a number of web sites that are relevant to a specific subject or theme. The Web sites are accompanied by annotations that guide student learning assessment. This is a good follow up to those who took the Portals to the World workshop.

E-Mail Accounts: Campus vs. Outside Accounts

Text Box: I Want
My AOL

In the 1980’s, there was a rallying cry, “I want my MTV!” In 2001, we might update that cry to, “I want my Hotmail/AOL/
Instant Messenger /etc.!” The debate as to what a person can and can’t do with a worksite computer is far from being resolved, and one may wonder what the big deal is all about?

Besides ownership and payroll issues, the most important reason St. Margaret’s has a campus e-mail account-only policy is to safeguard the entire network system. All Internet access goes through our servers first.  If there is a virus on an email that you receive via AOL, for example, then it can potentially infect our servers and corrupt the entire campus network. TrendMicro, our virus protection software, works well but is not infallible. We in Technology hope you can appreciate the amount of effort that would be required to repair the damage done should a virus get into the system.
