Boys Basketball Outlasts Sage Hill in 60-52 Overtime Win

Junior Jay Phansalkar had five points and two steals in overtime to seal the victory for the Tartans.
In a back and forth battle in front of a raucous home crowd, the Tartans trailed the Sage Hill Lightning 33-37 heading into the fourth quarter before pulling within three with a minute left in the game. With the score 43-46, senior Tyler Horgan made two three throws to cut the Lightning's lead to one. The Tartans were fouled again with 2.9 seconds left to play, sending junior Ryan Cragun to the line. Cragun made one of two, tying the Game at 46-all and forced the overtime period.

A strong extra-time effort led by St. Margaret's junior Jay Phansalkar's five points and two steals, was too much for Sage Hill to overcome. The Tartans escaped with a 60-52 victory, securing second place in the Academy League.

Head Coach Brian Carmer said, "I'm proud of our guys sticking together and keeping their composure in coming back from six down with two minutes to play. It was a great atmosphere with tremendous support from the SMES Kitchen."

Phansalkar accumulated 20 points on five 3-pointers while Horgan also notched 20 points in the win. The 13-5, 5-1 Tartans will look to avenge their only league loss to Crean Lutheran on Thursday, February 2 at home.

In other scores, frosh/soph boys basketball downed Sage Hill 52-19 while the junior varsity squad also defeated Sage Hill 79-30.
