Grade 7 Students 'Become the Line' in Hands-On Algebra Activity—Watch the Video!

A fundamental math concept was practiced in a way that required teamwork and fun.
Encouragement, laughter and teamwork reverberated across St. Margaret’s campus recently, as students in Stephanie Windes’ Middle School math class learned a fundamental concept in an interesting new way.

After having a lesson on how to graph lines using slope intercept form and having some practice, the Algebra 1A students went out to the Highlands Quad walkway to do a hands-on activity to reinforce the lesson.

“It would have been easy for us to just have a worksheet and practice individually graphing these lines,” Mrs. Windes said, “but what better way to learn than to ‘become’ the line?”

Coordinate planes were made on the walkway using masking tape, while the students teamed up in groups of four and five. Mrs. Windes would call out a linear equation, the students would decide in teams where the line should be on the plane, then they laid across the walkway and created that line.

“This simple activity created complete immersion and engagement,” Mrs. Windes said. “All the students were into graphing lines, and hopefully they will remember this concept with help from this activity.”
