‘Empty Bowls’ Gives Students the Chance to Serve and Mentor Through Art

More than 150 bowls were sold for $20 each, with all money donated to Father Serra’s Pantry and the Ecology Center’s Garden Outreach.
Seen as an opportunity for St. Margaret’s students to use visual arts as a vehicle to serve, the Empty Bowls Project took place Thursday at the Performing Arts Center to a large turnout.

More than 150 bowls were made by students from preschool through grade 12, as well as faculty and staff members and even Head of School Will Moseley. Bowls were sold for $20 each, with all money donated to Father Serra’s Pantry and the Ecology Center’s Garden Outreach. Both organizations were on hand to show their appreciation and discuss their causes.

Once the bowls were purchased, they were filled with soup generously donated by local vendors Sun Dried Tomato, Souplantation, Panera and Sapphire.

For the visual arts department, it was an opportunity to give new meaning to an art project already in the curriculum for some students.

“Many of them were already learning these techniques, so to put a service component to it is very rewarding,” said Jesse Standlea, visual arts department chair, who organized the event.

The project also served as an opportunity for Upper School students to serve as mentors. Preschool students spent time with Upper School students learning how to make their own bowl that would be donated to the event.

“The Upper School students had to teach the Preschool students how to do this,” Mr. Standlea said. “So they spent a week preparing, and making examples for the Preschool students to see. Going through that helped them to learn the process better.”

If you want to be involved, there are bowls still available for purchase. Contact Mr. Standlea at Jesse.Standlea@smes.org to learn more.
