St. Margaret’s MUN Program Opens School Year With Focus on Growth and Service

By Anika Grover, Grade 12
St. Margaret’s Model UN has an increasing focus on service and working for the benefit of others, which includes a partnership with Breakthrough SJC.
The St. Margaret’s Model United Nations (MUN) program, aiming to expand its reach in the community, has begun the 2016-2017 school year focusing on an agenda of growth and giving back.

In addition to monthly conferences, where participating students represent member-states of the United Nations and debate pressing global issues, St. Margaret’s Model UN has an increasing focus on service and working for the benefit of others. This has motivated the club’s leadership team to partner with Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano, an organization whose mission is providing academic enrichment opportunities and support for highly motivated, underserved middle and high school students in San Juan Capistrano so that they can realize their potential to excel in high school and graduate from college.

On a weekly basis, members of the school’s Model UN team volunteer with Breakthrough to teach its students the fundamentals of MUN, focusing specifically on confident public speaking and research.

Model United Nations is an educational simulation and academic competition in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations and the United Nations. Competitions provide students a forum for addressing current world issues related to regional conflicts, peacekeeping, human rights, women and children, economic and social development, and the environment, in a real-world context. Through these simulations, students better understand the inner working of the UN and learn skills in diplomacy and compromise.

The MUN program began the 2016-2017 school year in August with an open house for incoming students. More than 20 students attended and listened to officers from the club discuss the value of MUN and international diplomacy, describe how the club functions and share some of their own MUN experiences. The momentum from the open house was evident during the club’s first meeting in September, which had a large turnout from all four Upper School grade levels.

The program’s annual tournaments start in October, a cross-country travel conference is planned for the second semester, and the partnership with Breakthrough SJC will continue throughout the school year.
