The Tartans opened the Academy League cross country season in impressive fashion Tuesday at Mason Park with a 12-point win over second place Crean Lutheran.

Nic Gitter lead the boys team with a race-winning time of 15:43 after taking control of the race with 800 meters to go. Nic Gitter, Matt Colglazier, Charlie Smith, Robbie Graham and Luke Gitter combined to put five runners in the top 11 to seal the decisive victory.

The Tartans varsity girls lineup included only two runners with prior league racing experience, but that did not stop them from shaving off 5:17 from their 2015 team time at Mason Park. They finished second to Sage Hill who is ranked No. 2 in the division and will look to close the gap as they accumulate race experience over the season.

Julia Martin was the top finisher for the Tartans in 4th place (19:36), and in an impressive display of athleticism, she left the course immediately following the race to assume her starting role on the volleyball team during their match at Crean Lutheran.
