Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is a national observance held annually in October every year. Our theme this year is . Red Ribbon Week was established in 1988 as a stand against underage use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. Students are encouraged to wear red ribbons to show their support for year around drug prevention efforts. This week we will provide education on alcohol and drug abuse focusing attention on prescription drug abuse an increasing issue for teens in our country, peer pressure, and making good decisions.

“Kick Drugs to the Curb”

7:45-8:40- Hurlbut Theatre- Middle School Drug Prevention Panel-
“Athlete-To-Addict”- The link between prescription painkillers and illicit drug use is well known. Last year, a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control stated the danger of physicians fueling prescription painkiller overdoses. Athletes having surgery after sports related injuries may be at high risk. This year’s panel will share important information on the dangers of over prescribing prescription medicine and the risks it may have leading to addiction.

College students make up one of the largest groups of drug abusers nationwide. Young people (ages 18-24) are already at a heightened risk of addiction. Starting out in college produces some natural social anxiety for many students and the temptation to drink is strong which can lead to binge drinking and drugs. Drinking to have fun may lead many students toward addiction. Our panel this year will inform us of the current status of substance use and abuse on college campuses today.

12:30-1:10- “Drugs Out Cook Out” – Senior Quad
Located in the senior quad- Peer Counselors present the 4th annual “Drugs Out Cook Out” to celebrate and promote a drug free lifestyle! This year’s theme “Kick Drugs to the Curb” illustrates the commitment SMES students have towards leading a drug free lifestyle focusing on excellence in extra-curricular activities and academics. Students may purchase a meal combo for $5 including
  • including a burger/chips/water. Bake sale items will be sold separately for $1 each. Come join your peers for lunch and great music!

  • Ray Lozano is a certified drug prevention specialist and drug and alcohol counselor for the state of California. He is a national and international motivational speaker and has shared his expertise to students, parents, teachers, and community groups for the past 23 years. Mr. Lozano delivers a choice changing, evidence based, message about current drugs and their dangers. His presentation is helping to educate and motivate teens to make healthy choices.
12:25-1:15- First Annual “Kick Drugs to the Curb” Kicking Contest-
Students can sign up in advance to participate in a “field goal kicking” competition. Coaches will be present to facilitate the contestants on the football field Friday at lunch! Finalist will have a “kick-off” at half time during Friday night’s football game. Signups will be outside of Coach Marmelstein’s office. Prizes will be awarded during class meetings on Friday. Limited entries will be accepted.
Raising Healthy Children Presents:
Parent Drug Prevention Education – Tuesday November 1st, 8:00-9:30- Library 
Parents strive to find the best ways to raise their children to live happy, healthy, and productive lives. Research supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has shown the important role that parents play in preventing their children from starting to use drugs. Come join our drug prevention panel to learn about the emerging trends and commonly abused drugs.
