What is JCL?
JCL is a nationally recognized organization for Middle School and High School students, who have an interest in Latin and the Classics and most of all in having fun. The club is dedicated to helping the school community and learning about the Latin Language. Delegates do not need to be enrolled in Latin to join the club or to attend the convention, though it may be helpful. The Officers of the SMES JCL aim to provide a comfortable atmosphere for the delegates to enjoy themselves, while also keeping decorum while we prepare for the two conventions of the year.
Within the club there are many activities a student can choose to participate in.
First, there is publicity. Anyone in the club can choose to write an article for the school newspaper about the club, publicizing events and achievements. He or she can also approach the publicity chair to see if they would like help in making any posters for meetings or events. Second, there is certamen. Anyone currently enrolled in Latin can try out for the Latin team of their level. Only four students are chosen for this activity to represent St. Margaret's Episcopal School at the State Convention. Diligent work is required for this activity and the student must commit him or herself to the spot on the team by regularly attending training sessions held every Wednesday at lunch in Ms. Duim's Room.
Third, anyone is welcome to help out. Just ask any of the officers if they would like help. They would be glad to give you something to do. But in any case, the most important thing to do is to prepare for state by keeping good grades in class and studying Latin, doing some art projects, writing poetry or prose, and training in sports to compete at the State Latin Convention!
