How To's

Help: Spelling It Out

You open the financial report and read, "Investments down, you lost money." What??? You turn the page over and examine the empty envelope hoping to find more information, but there isn't any.  This is a little what it's like getting a help message like "Printer doesn't work." or "I need help with my computer!". What, you ask, is a good help request? Here is a genuine request sent in by one of your co-workers:

"The icon below for the printer disappeared and for some reason, I can’t print or at least nothing is coming out of my printer.
When I check the printer window, it says “printing” but then soon it changes to ”deleting”. I did restart the computer, plug off the printer,
and all the little tricks that I knew. But nothing seems to be working. Could you please help? My free blocks are A and F."

This request describes, in detail, what the problem is, what the user tried to do to resolve the situation, and what times are best for a technician to come by. Providing a little more information needn't take much time, and the extra information certainly makes things easier for technicians who are trying to resolve the problem.

Tech Tips: Doing Things McQuickly

Quick Shut-Down's

In a hurry? Hit ALT+F4 while you're in a program and you'll shut the program down. If you're at the Windows Desktop and hit it, you'll shut down your computer.

Closing Windows Quickly

Trying to prevent someone from  trying to read over your shoulder? Maybe you want to just clear your screen of all the windows you have up (without closing the programs) so you can access your desktop. To hide all open windows hold down the Window key + D. To bring it all back, Win Key + D again.
