Announcements

Implementing New Email Policy

As many of you know, email takes up space on a server much like paper takes up space in a file cabinet. Although the size of storage space on
our server has been increased, too much accrued email results in a sluggish system.

Beginning Thanksgiving, a new email policy will be put in place for faculty and staff. We will keep deleted messages for 3 days, sent mail for 30
days
, and inbox mail for 90 days. In order to insure that mail you want to keep doesn't get deleted by accident, we strongly encourage you to attend the class being offered in this month's training opportunities listed above. You will learn how to create folders in which to save important email for Web Outlook, learn how to move messages into these folders, get tips on mailbox organization, etc.

Creating Agenda Slides In MS PowerPoint

Have you ever needed an agenda slide for a presentation you've just completed, e.g., a slide at or near the beginning that lets the audience know what you plan to cover? Did you simply put together a new slide containing the titles used on the other slides? What would you think if you could get MS PowerPoint to make the slide for you?

PowerPoint can do all the busy work, allowing you to simply put in the "fine touches" at the end.  After you've created your presentation, and you're ready for a summary/agenda slide, go to the slide sorter. Select the slides that you want included in your summary.

  • If you have consecutive slides, click on the first slide, hold down the Shift key, then click on the last one. First, last and all slides in between should now be selected.
  • If you have non-consecutive slides, hold down the Ctrl key while you pick and choose which slides to include.

Now that the slides are selected, it's time to let PowerPoint work for you.

Look for the Summary Slide button on the Slide Sorter Toolbar. Click it.

Instantly, PowerPoint will create a new slide that lists all the titles from the selected slides. The summary slide has been placed just before the first selected slide. (This slide was created from 6 different slides with titles listed in the bulleted list.)

You may want to edit it a bit, e.g., change the "Summary Slide" title to something snappier, but for the most part, the time-consuming part is done.

Listing Programs Alphabetically

(Note - you'll need IE 5.0 or better installed for this one - that should
be most of you).

Have you ever searched for a program on your start menu and wished
they were listed alphabetically? They can be! Here's how:

1. Click the Start button, Programs. Highlight any program that's
    listed there.

2. Now, just right-click and select "Sort by name" from the resulting
    menu.

That's it. Remember that you can still drag and drop program groups
around if you want to manually specify which ones sit at the top of the
list.

Did You Know?

Generating Dummy Text in Word

When you need to type some text into a Word document for test purposes, don't waste your time doing it manually. You can let Word
do the job for you. Let's say that you would like to type in a single four-sentence paragraph. Just click at a blank line in your document,
type =rand(1,4) and press Enter. Word will automatically type:

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy
dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

The first number inside the parentheses is the number of paragraphs and the second number is the number of sentences in each para-
graph. So, for 22 paragraphs of 22 sentences, you'd enter =rand(22,22). It's just that easy!
