X-Files: The Case of the Non-Existent Attachment

The email in your Inbox indicates an attachment. You go to open the attachment…and you end up searching in vain for something that isn’t there. Frustrating and time-consuming, isn’t it? What's going on?

In Outlook, this will generally happen when you are using the Preview Pane option (**see below). That's when your mailbox is divided into two halves: The upper half is your inbox and the lower half  “previews” the contents of a selected mail item in your inbox without having to open it.

                                                                                                                                                                        paper clip icon

Sometimes you’ll see the actual attachment in the Preview Pane but if you don’t, look for a paper clip icon on the median divider separating the upper from lower half. Click on it one time and the attachment will open up

If you don’t see the paper clip, position your mouse arrow over the median divider, right click, and a box will open. Click on the “header information” option, and you’ll see information appear in that divider, including the paper clip icon on the right hand side. Now, you can click on the paper clip and open the attachment

*If you've read this far and realize you don't have a Preview Pane, it's easy to activate. Just go up to your Outlook toolbar, select "View" and then click "Preview Pane".

Caring For Your New Computer

You always wanted that sleek new model and now, several hundreds of dollars later, you have it - the latest, fastest, most powerful, hot new computer! And, like a new automobile, you want to keep it looking and running great, but what's the best way?

CNET offers a great online article called "Most Wanted: Common Crimes Against Your PC and How to Fight Them." If you learn the basics for computer care like running ScanDisk and System Defragmenter on a regular basis, if you free up space by deleting unnecessary files, if you avoid certain habits like eating, drinking & smoking around your computer, you'll make your investment last that much longer. Read all about it at http://www.cnet.com/software/0-3662-8-4458316-1.html?tag=st.sw.3662-8-4458316-2.BACK2.3662-8-4458316-1

January Classes

Stump the Teacher,  Wednesday, January 9   MS lab

Here's your opportunity to show up the teacher! If you've got a favorite tidbit you'd like to share or a question that no one seems to know the answer to, come to the MS Lab. You can also come with any questions from previous classes.

GradeQuick Party,  Wednesday, January 16  US Lab

We hear the groans already. It's January and we're headed into finals and report cards! The routine of entering grades and updating records is second only to going to your dentist's office (apologies to any dentists out there), but we can make it a bit easier by inviting you to a GradeQuick party in the US Lab on January 16. Join your colleagues as we tell jokes, dance (right, Steve Sherman?), ask questions, and get all the assistance necessary to get the job done.
