Tech Tips: Working More Effectively

Ctrl+Z: Keyboard Shortcut Tip

Ctrl+Z, a universal undo command, is typically used in word processing documents, but it also works just about anywhere in windows. If you accidentally drag an icon to your desktop and wish you had it to do over, just hit Ctrl+Z.  The icon vacates your desktop and jumps back to wherever it was before. This works with Windows Explorer too. Let's say you accidentally delete a file. Instead of going to the recycle bin to recover it, hit Ctrl+Z.

         ClipArt and Color Schemes

You've found the perfect clipart for your document except the color scheme isn't working at all. Instead of taking more time to scour the web looking for another clipart, you may be able to change the color scheme*! How?  You need to have MS PowerPoint loaded on your machine. Once loaded, click on the following link and read up on this technique.

Changing Clipart Color Schemes

*Word of caution: Be careful when making changes to someone else's creation. There may be copyright issues involving its use, including color changes.

 Remember the Marketplace!

If you want to sell or buy something at a great price, you can start right here in your own backyard. The Tartan Marketplace is an online bulletin board created exclusively for the faculty and staff of SMES. Here, you may post an item to be advertised in the Tartan Marketplace or search for items already posted.  Check it out weekly for new items.

Pets Welcome

Some of you (and we won't say who) have become the proud new "parents" of a puppy, but holidays and vacations can present a problem when planning a trip. Here's a great website that lists places that welcomes Fifi or Fido.

Choose "Listings" and you’ll find a lot of different choices in the US, Canada, and abroad as well as Ski Resorts, Emergency Vets, Bed and Breakfasts, Cabins and Cottages, Amusement Parks, and many other places that are pet friendly. Choose one of these options and then search by state.

HTTP Error Codes: Why are you blocking this website? I can't get on the Internet! Is our server down again? Our helpline gets an earful when people aren't able to access a website and sometimes, we can unblock or resolve a server issue that's causing the problem. Often times, though, it has nothing to do with our server and everything to do with the other server. Here's a little primer on error codes.

400: Bad Request - A URL incorrectly typed, the server has no clue what is being looked for, or you aren't allowed to have access. Usually, it's a case of the URL being typed incorrectly.

401: Unauthorized Request - this is when you try to obtain something on the web server that you're not allowed to.

403: Forbidden - You can't access the page because it's password protected (on the other end) or it may be blocked from your domain.

404: Not Found - The page you're looking for was not found. This is usually the most common error message that occurs when a web page has been removed or re-named.

500: Internet Error - Usually caused by a CGI error. You fill out a form but the script used to process it is not working properly.

503: Service Unavailable - The server may be overloaded, down or have other similar problems. Try again later.

One last thing: If you do come across an error message, try hitting the Refresh button on your
web browser. Sometimes that does the trick if the serve
r just didn't get your first request for one reason or another.                                                                                                             worldstart.com
