December 2001 - Warmest Holiday Wishes from Your Technology Staff

Help: A Two-Way Street

As with any growing organization, change is inevitable and hopefully headed in a positive direction. To this end, we want to thank all of you who use the "help" lines, both email and voicemail. Our goal is to continue to improve our response time and quality of service.

One way you can assist us is to respond when we ask for clarification or more information in order to proceed with your help call.

Another thing you can do is to provide details when asking for assistance. "My computer doesn't work" doesn't really give us any clue as to what's going on with your machine. Telling us, "When I try to turn on [boot up] my computer, I get a funny black screen with white printing that says "Non-System disk or disk error. Replace and strike with any key when ready," gives a technician enough information to start diagnosing the problem. In this case, a floppy disk is left in the floppy drive and needs to be removed before the computer will boot up.

Sometimes, though not always, more IS better.

More T-Team Members

Perhaps you've already seen one of these two young men at work in your classroom and wondered who they were and if they should be fooling around with your equipment! If you haven't already met them, we'd like to introduce you to two Technology helpers:  Josh Ingalls, the son of  Carol Ann and Joe Ingalls, has two years of summer experience under his belt working in Technology; and Michael Wong, currently a 9th grade student here at SMES, is a graduate of the Computer Hardware class.

Is there something you'd like to read about in the Tech Gazette? Do you have a question after reading a certain article? Would you like to pose a question to a Technology staff member? Here is an invitation to submit an idea, a question, or a vexing problem for consideration in a future issue of the Gazette.

Submit your idea or question to      nicki.yokota@smes.org.

Training: Label-Mania

Creating labels. Sounds about exciting as writing student comments or collating papers, right? Well, think again. This workshop will show you how you can create and print labels for things other than file folders: Table place cards; mailing labels to give as gifts; name tags; gift tags; wine bottle labels; etc.
