Welcome to CS @ St. Margaret's.

Computer Science has become a diverse and influential area of study over the past half century. College graduates of CS programs find themselves engaged in many varied disciplines in which computing resources are pulled in to solve an array of problems ranging from user interfaces, simulation of real-world events, and optimization of resources, information storage/retrieval, medical imaging, and more. As technology becomes an increasingly larger part of our lives in the 21st century, knowledge of the fundamentals of computing can only further enhance our abilities in many fields of study.

Mr. Wie teaches two courses in Computer Science at SMES:

AP Computer Science fulfills the requirements of the Advanced Placement Computer Science A Curriculum, and prepares students to take the designated exam in May of each year. It develops a strong foundation in the basic principles of computing, with a focus on programming methodology, algorithms, and data structures. There is a major emphasis on understanding the theory behind the creation of software solutions, and not just completing programming activities.

Data Structures and Algorithms is a post-AP project course currently offered as an independent study option for students interested in more advanced computer science topics. The second semester includes an introduction to the principles of software engineering.

About the Instructor.

GENE WIE earned a B.S. Information and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine, where his primary research areas were Software Engineering and Information Systems. He was one of the main contributors to the initial design of the Motion Capture Music (MCM) system, and learned software development techniques using Java, C++, and PERL. His work in the technology industry has included positions as a software developer, technical writer, and systems builder, where he put his skills to use in producing database access functionality for web-enabled wireless devices, testing and documenting a wide range of Universal Serial Bus (USB) products, and building/maintaining thousands of server systems for web hosting and document archival.

He has served as Director of Human Resources for MusiShare, Inc. and taught an innovative course in Music Technology at the Orange County High School of the Arts exploring digital media and copyright law. During the late 90's he was an active member of the electronic music scene, managing over a hundred musicians world-wide in the composition and  distribution of free original music, a contributing member of the electronic art group ACiD Productions, and editor-in-chief of the scene music newsletter TraxWeekly, which at its peak boasted over a thousand subscribers world-wide. He is computer gaming enthusiast whose favorite game series include Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Civilization, Starcraft, Final Fantasy, and Mass Effect.
