What your report to Dr. No Fu Ling should look like.  (This is a modified formal lab.  Of course each student writes his/her own lab report with all parts including the procedure in your own words.)

Abstract: Your report should begin with a summary statement of your method and results.  This is what an abstract is like.  An abstract is the “cliff notes” version of your experiment.  In the abstract you should summarize in a sentence or two the content of each section of your report.  You should include your empirical formula in our case.  Since this requires complete knowledge of the whole lab, write this paragraph after you have written the rest of the lab.

Equipment and Materials: Give a list of the equipment and chemical materials that you used.

Procedure: Follow the abstract with your detailed procedure.  In your procedure you want to accurately relate what you did to solve the problem.  Be sure to include details on the tricky points.  Number these steps.

Data and Observations: After this collect your data in one spot.  (Remember, data is any information that you measured or read from an instrument.  No calculated values.)  Follow this with observations at the various stages of the lab.

Analysis: Compute your empirical formula in an Analysis section.  All calculations go here.  Do these by hand and neatly.  Clearly label what you are calculating.  Show your final empirical formula.

Error Analysis: Finally, discuss at what point in the procedure you know that some error was introduced.  Point out how this could have affected your results.

All parts of this report should be typed except for the Analysis section.

Your final report is due Friday, Feb. 16th.
