Unit 6: Chemical Reactions and Stoichiometry
Guided
Instructional Activity 6-2
Working Mode:
in groups of two
Reading: Chapter 11
Learning
Objectives:
To write a chemical reaction from words, to predict the product of single
replacement reaction based upon the relative activity of elements and to predict
the states of products based on solubility chart.
Part
1: Write and
balance in chemical equation form the following sentences. Include the states.
a.
Solid
magnesium hydroxide reacts with aqueous nitric acid to yield aqueous magnesium
nitrate and liquid water.
b.
Aqueous
strontium chloride reacts with aqueous lead (II) nitrate to form aqueous
strontium nitrate and solid lead (II) chloride.
c.
Solid
calcium phosphate and aqueous potassium bromide are produced when aqueous
potassium phosphate and aqueous calcium bromide react.
d.
The
reaction of solid lithium with liquid water yields aqueous lithium hydroxide and
gaseous dihydrogen.
Part
2: Using the activity series table (text p. 295) and the halogen
activity rules predict whether a reaction would occur in the following
reactions. If a reaction does occur
write the products in the correct formulas, then balance the
equation. If no reaction occurs
write “NR.”
a.
Fe(s)
+ SnCl2(aq)
à
b.
NaCl(aq)
+ Br2(l)
à
c.
Ag(s)
+ CuCl2(aq)
à
d.
Zn(NO3)2(aq)
+ Mg(s) à
e.
CuCl(aq)
+ Cd(s)
à
Part
3: Predict the products for the following reactions.
Give the states for each of the products.
Balance the equations.
a.
Pb(NO3)2
(aq) + KI (aq) à
b.
NiCO3(s)
+ HCl(aq) à
c.
MgSO4
(aq) + Na3PO4
(aq) à
d.
Ba(OH)2
(aq) + MgSO4
(aq) à
e.
C4H10(l) +
O2(g) à
