Unit: Acids and Bases                                                                           Reading: Chapter 19

Working Mode: Pairs. Follow the instructions below, answer the questions.

Learning Objectives:  To identify Bronsted-Lowry acids and base and their conjugate pairs.  Predict the products of an acid-base neutralization reaction.

Part 1: In the following reactions identify in the reactants the acid and the base.

a.       2HNO3 (aq) + Ca(OH)2(aq) à Ca(NO3)2(aq) + 2H2O(l)

b.      H3PO4 (aq) + 3NH3(aq) à (NH4)3PO4(aq)

c.       NH4+(aq) + H2O(l) à NH3(aq) + H3O+(aq)

d.      H2O(l) + S2-(aq) à OH-(aq) + HS-(aq)

Part 2:  Identify the conjugate Acid/Base pairs in the following reactions.

a.       CH3COOH(aq) + H2O(l) à CH3COO-(aq) + H3O+(aq)

b.      NaH2PO4 (aq) + NaOH(aq) à Na2HPO4(aq) + H2O(l)

c.       H2CO3 (aq) + Na2CO3(aq) à 2NaHCO3(aq)

d.      2H2O(l) à H3O+(aq) + OH-(aq)

Part 3:  In the following equations apply the coefficients as specific stoichiometric proportions.  Predict the products, write the overall equation according to the given reactant coefficients. Include states.

a.       H2SO4(aq) + KOH(aq) à

H2SO4(aq) + 2 KOH(aq) à ( one different product than above)

b.      H2PO4- (aq) + NaOH(aq) à

H2PO4- (aq) + 2 NaOH(aq) à (one different product than above)
