Unit 1: “Matter and Change” – Chapter 2

Internet Resources

INTRODUCTION:    Chemistry is a science that seeks to describe the interactions of matter and energy.  The basic matter building blocks are the atoms of elements.  We find atoms in a variety of combinations in compounds and also in mixtures with other elements and compounds.  Chemistry seeks to classify these forms of matter.  The process of exploring matter and its energy interactions requires making observations, taking data and interpreting or analyzing these observations.  Often we observe chemicals undergoing change.  Some changes produce energy and yield new chemicals.  Other changes just make the chemicals change their state.  In this unit we will discuss these changes and learn to use them to distinguish the type of change that occurred.

OBJECTIVES:  As you study this unit, you should be able to do the following: (source)

  1. Identify basic lab equipment by name.  (sheet)

  2. Know and explain basic safety rules of the laboratory.  (safety rules)

  3. Explore a chemistry phenomenon using the scientific method. (lab)

  4. Describe how to distinguish between a substance and a mixture. (2.1)

  5. Compare heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures.  (2.2 and lab)

  6. Describe techniques to separate mixtures.  (2.2 and lab)

  7. Explain the difference between an element and a compound.  (2.3)

  8. Distinguish between physical and chemical changes in a specific example. (2.4)

  9. State the law of conservation of matter and describe how it relates to physical changes and chemical reactions. (2.4)

 LEARNING ACTIVITIES:

 To learn about objectives 1-9:

[              READ the list of “Safety Rules and Guidelines for Chemistry” alone and with your parents.

[                 FILL OUT and sign the “Student Safety Agreement.”  Have your parents sign it as well.  Return it to class ASAP.  (I must have it before you begin your first lab.)

[    READ Chapter 1, pp. 21-25.

[              LEARN names to basic lab equipment from the attached sheet.

[    DISCUSS demonstration of mint Mentos® reaction with Diet Coke®

[    PERFORM “Mentos® – Diet-Coke® Lab

[              READ Chapter 2, pp. 38-57.

[             READ and PERFORM lab exploration "Investigating the Properties of a Mixture" on day assigned.

[              WRITE answers to questions in  "Investigating the Properties of a Mixture."

[              READ and PERFORM "Going a Step Further" on page 4 of "Investigating a Mixture."

[              WRITE answers to questions on page 4 in  "Investigating a Mixture."

[              WRITE answers to questions at the end of Chapter 2: 36-37, 42, 44, 46, 48-50, 52, 54-56, 66, 67, 69, 70, 72 found on pp. 58-59.

To make sure you understand the objectives for this unit:

[              ASK me, the teacher, any lingering QUESTIONS

[              PRACTICE your understanding of the Unit with the “Standardized Test Prep on p. 61.
CHECK YOUR ANSWERS.
